FORTY-SIX

EDUARDO

Eduardo hugged Nikki when he returned to their suite. He was unsure, he told his wife, what the ship doctor thought of him now. “The doc gave me a pass for interfering with Justin’s overdose, but now that I’ve been knifed by a fellow passenger, he was questioning me like a medical examiner at a crime scene.”

Nikki nodded. “Raul’s attack was so vicious. This throws him into a completely different light.”

“I’ll take Justin for a drink and ask him about Raul,” Eduardo said. “Find out what he knows without giving away that Raul’s not a crew member.”

“He accused me of working for Simone,” Nikki said.

Eduardo raised an eyebrow. “That’s odd. Isn’t he the one working for her?”

“Obviously, no honor between thieves here,” Nikki said. “He’s suspicious of the woman he runs errands for and makes love to in the corridor.”

“C’est la vie.” Eduardo winked at Nikki.

“But I got into his email briefly. He had emails from a Met address.”

“What did they say?”

“That’s when he opened the door, so I didn’t get a chance to read them. The email address was generic, not Claire’s, but I wonder if there’s any connection between them.”

“That’s an interesting question,” Eduardo said.

Nikki took her hand to the back of her neck and rubbed it. “But then, he’s a professional photographer and works for an online art gallery, so who knows. He may have simply made an inquiry on some piece or topic.”

“Your neck,” Eduardo said, changing the subject. “It’s bruising.”

Nikki checked herself in the dresser mirror.

Eduardo asked her to sit so he could examine her. He palpated the soft tissue for muscle spasms and tightness. Asking her to rotate her head, tilt forward, and turn to each side, he determined that her range of motion was normal.

“So nice to have my own private doctor,” Nikki said, kissing him.

“A CT scan is in order to make sure all is okay.” He realized he could have lost her today, but he didn’t want to think about that. He supported her passion to do this kind of work.

Nikki agreed a scan was a good idea, but not until the trip was over. “I don’t think ships have that equipment on board.”

“That’s right,” Eduardo said. “Now stand for me on one leg.” He counted out thirty seconds, then asked her to switch legs and do the same. “You’ve passed this doctor’s myelopathic exam.”

That was not the end of the test, though. He asked Nikki to smile, to stick her tongue out, and touch the tip of her nose with her eyes closed.

“I haven’t had a stroke,” Nikki said.

“Just checking you over thoroughly. You took a nasty fall, and you might have fainted briefly. Now open your mouth and say ahh.” Eduardo told her that everything checked out okay, but she was already bruising where Raul had choked her.

“Not to worry,” she laughed. “I’ll wear turtlenecks, so people won’t think you’re abusing me.”

An alert from the Ring app followed by a loud rap on the door surprised them both.

“Wait,” Nikki whispered.
